My coaching philosophy
“DO OR DO NOT. THERE IS NO TRY!” - Yoda from “The Empire Strikes Back” (Star Wars) I believe that we all walk around unconscious. I really mean unconscious in the truest sense of the word! Now, before you try to come to terms with what I’ve just said, let me explain what I mean by this: I believe that, as a general rule, unless we deliberately take action to prevent it, we human beings live our lives oblivious to how our thoughts, beliefs and feelings constantly betray us. And that’s where I believe my coaching skills come in to play. Here’s my offer: I will provide you with a safe space to laugh, cry, scream, shout or do anything else you want to to get out of your own way. I will offer you a caring, nurturing environment in which you will be encouraged and inspired to achieve your aims and desires but in which I will hold you totally accountable for what you set out to achieve. What you want to achieve is entirely up to you - I don’t believe in telling you what I can help you achieve (e.g. more money, more free time, etc., etc.). I will be there to ‘hold up a mirror’ for you to look into and to help you realize your true potential, knowing that there can always be more! To summarize, I will show you that owning your thoughts, beliefs and feelings - instead of letting them own you - is the way to very quickly start achieving a life, or areas of your life that may seem impossibly far away right now. And do you want to know the best part? We will have a load of fun doing it! My background and qualifications Let me be very clear from the outset, I coach because I love doing it, because I understand the stresses of an unfulfilled life all too well and because I believe my in-depth business experience will benefit a wide range of clients on a broad range of issues. Let me share a bit about my education and business experience: I matriculated from Mondeor High School in 1991. From there I attended the University of Witwatersrand where in 1995, I obtained a BSc in Computational and Applied Mathematics. In 1996 I decided to enter my family business and a year later I elected to continue my studies further, on a part time basis, at the University of South Africa. In 1999 I completed my BSc Honours degree in Applied Mathematics and was awarded a prize by Liberty Life for outstanding academic achievements. I was offered a job at Liberty but I declined, deciding to focus on learning all I could about our family business with a view to helping implement the succession plans. I spent time over the next few years in diverse roles including Operations, Logistics, Finance and finally, Strategy & Marketing. In 2005 I felt it was time to get back to my studies and I registered for the Management Advancement Program at Wits Business School. I passed this with distinction and was awarded a prize for finishing top of my class. Next I completed the Diploma in Strategic Management at the Gordon Institute of Business Sciences where, again, I passed with distinction and finished top of my class. Currently, I am busy completing my MBA at Wits Business School. So what made me get into coaching? The strange thing is that despite the fact that I was achieving a lot, both in the fields of Personal Development and Vocation, I remained seriously unfulfilled. As a result, two things started happening to me: 1) I became deeply de-motivated with my life and 2) I developed a chronic addiction to food, which saw my health suffer tremendously. On the positive side, my wife, Lisa, is my soul mate and we have a wonderful young son named Carmine. Together, they were the inspiration I needed to struggle through a very difficult period in my life. I was good at maintaining a façade, though, and I doubt that anyone who saw me would ever have guessed how truly unhappy I was about aspects of my life other than the relationship with my wife and son. My motivational and health problems continued until my life reached something of a breaking – or turning – point. ENTER NEW INSIGHTS AFRICA!!! On the 1st of December 2007 I took a bold decision to change my life! I liked the look of the New Insights Life Coach Training Programme and just felt that I had to do it. Boy did my life change! In just four months I have achieved a level of life that is just ridiculously improved from where it was. Today, I am nothing but 110% motivated and my health is way back on track. My story is different from most other coaches in that I woke up to the fact that what I was already doing and what I already had was exactly what I wanted from life. I had just been walking around like a ‘zombie’ for the lat 17 years not knowing what I wanted and believing that everything other people did and had was always better. I have now committed myself to a lifetime of learning as I feel that change is something to be cherished and embraced. I like to challenge myself with stretch goals as I love the feeling of achieving and the fulfillment it now gives me. The most valuable thing I have learned up to now is that it is not outside influences that make or break you – it is your inner self. I truly believe that one can be, do and have anything one likes!
