Lucia Hewitt: Halfway Gardens, Midrand Gauteng

Hi. I'm 45 and feeling like I've not achieved anything with my life. Work leaves me feeling unfulfilled and quite frankly I'm finding it incredibly boring - I know I can make a more meaningful contribution and have come to the conclusion that this contribution would be better suited to running my own business.

So, I'm totally "Naafi" and I want to change this. I have also realised that I can't do it on my own - my head is filled with ideas of what I'd like to do but sadly, of late, I'm a starter and not a finisher ... just can't seem to bring anything to fruition. So, I'm volunteering for the free coaching by one of your trainees. I'm hoping they'll be able to give me the tools to make the much wanted changes to my life.

Thank you.

for Lucia
by: Wendy B

Dear Lucia
Yes, boredom can lead one to a very flat place indeed. It is the sign of a person too intelligent for the work they are doing. So take heart. Also, you may feel you have achieved nothing, but after a few more years you will probably look back and see it wasnt nothing at all, but an excellent foundation for what came after. Learning is never wasted.

I suggest that you go to the CSIR for a personality, preferences and aptitude test. After all,"running your own business" is only a vehicle for finding a topic which really fascinates you and which you feel is really worthwhile. This will help you aim for the right level and the right area.

Also, try to remember the things that excited you when you were young, however impractical that may seem now, it is still a pointer towards fulfilling a long cherished need or interest.

You are on a thrilling voyage of discovery and have already made the first steps. I wish you every success.
