Being coached and life coaching
by: Bill Burridge

Thanks for the question which is a good one.

Experiencing what it is like to be a 'client' by being coached does offer a valuable dimension to anyone wanting to become a life coach.

Being coached is not a prerequisite for training to become a life coach but we do recommend it for anyone aspiring to be an advanced coach, that is why we build it in as a requirement of our PRO certification.

Many of our trainees have benefited from being coached before they start training and many more have done both in parallel by signing up for the PRO option. Others have chosen to become certified before hiring their own coach to help them hone their skills.

There are good arguments for all three routes and this is a personal decision.

If you are considering being coached first because you feel you 'need to get your own life in order' before training then I believe this is a misguided motivation. The training programme itself is a hugely beneficial personal development programme. You would find it difficult to train as a life coach without going through your own personal transformation in the process.

If, however, you are considering being coached first in order to personally test the power of the coaching system process to see if that is what you would like to do then I think this is a good motivation.

My personal recommendation, if you are already pretty sure you want to be a life coach, is to use coaching to help you refine your ability to coach. So choose the PRO option and combine coaching and training ... or, if you can't afford it do the CLASSIC option and then, once you are certified get yourself a top coach!

I hope this helps.
