What is your purpose
by: Anonymous

I'm certified Life coach, not that certification substitute competence or commends anyone as fit for such a responsibility nevertheless in my understanding and knowledge, generally, there are no specific requirements needed to become a life coach. There are no formal education requirements needed to become a life coach, either. In fact, essentially any person who wants to be a life coach can become a life coach, regardless of age or educational background. There are no governmental restrictions or requirements either, my concern and question then is for what purpose do you or any other such body serves?

Hi Raine,

This question has been answered already in a previous post but let me repeat (and update) what I said there.

Let me take the opportunity to clear up a misunderstanding. COMENSA (the representative body in SA for coaches and mentors) does not currently offer any form of coach training accreditation.

New Insights Africa is a registered coach training institution member of COMENSA. We are also founder members of CETASA (Coach Education and Training Association). We therefore take an active interest in COMENSA's evolution.

COMENSA has recently announced its intent to introduce a tiered form of membership structure where membership criteria would be introduced to take account of a coach's experience and training. This is likely to be phased in over the next 18-24 months.

New Insights is committed to upholding the standard of coaching in SA. We aim to work within whatever guidelines COMENSA chooses to introduce in future, in the best interests of our coaches and trainees.

At present New Insights has its own internal accreditation process to assure us of the standard of coaches who carry our certification. This involves signing a code of ethics, completing theory assignments and an exam as well as substantial practice coaching and review of feedback.
