Time to Celebrate

Last week-end, like a large number of South Africans, I was huddled around the TV screen in the company of family and friends, watching the final of the Super 14 rugby tournament.

Curious... yet amazing

How curious, yet thoroughly amazing it was to witness this spectacle as it was played out in the heart of Soweto to the deafening drone of vuvuzelas, those love-them-or-hate-them instruments traditionally associated with soccer. Soweto folk opened their arms to the hordes of lovers of the oval ball game - a game that was once seen by many as representative of the dark days of apartheid.

After the match the winning captain, Victor Matfield paid tribute to sport and the significant role it has had in helping galvanize this rainbow nation. Who can forget the sight of Nelson Mandela, respondent in a Springbok jersey, opening the rugby world cup in 1995?

The beautiful game

In little over a week sport will be foremost in our minds again. This time in the guise of the ultimate championship of the 'beautiful game' of football or soccer that has such a massive world-wide following.

It's a time for us, as South Africans, to be very, very proud. Despite the very many problems that beset us as a nation, we are once again about to show the world that we should never, ever be underestimated.
