Insights: The World is a Mirror
December 15, 2008
Hi

The World is a Mirror

Last week I talked about taking time during the holiday period to reflect on where you find yourself and what you have achieved versus what you set out to achieve this year

When you find yourself having underachieved against your plans, you can do one of three things:

  • Lay blame for your shortcomings on someone or something else.

  • Justify why you are where you are

  • Take Responsibility for your situation

The only action that will truly empower you to change your life is the last one – taking responsibility!

Some time back, one of my readers sent me an article called ‘The Limit is Me’ written by a gentleman called Robin Good. I thought it was a very powerful little story that I knew had a place in Insights.

Today, with thanks to Robin, I’d like to share ‘The Limit is Me’ (with minor adaptations) with you as you reflect on 2008.

The Limit is Me (adapted)

One day all the employees reached the office and they saw a big advice on the door on which it was written:

“Yesterday, the person who has been hindering your growth in this company passed away. We invite you to join the funeral in the room that has been prepared in the gym.”

In the beginning, they all got sad as they reflected on the death of one of their colleagues, but after a while they started getting curious to know who that person was who had hindered the growth of their colleagues and the company itself – and why?

The excitement in the gym was such that a security firm was ordered to control the crowd within the room.

The more people reached the coffin, the more the excitement heated up. Everyone was wondering: “Who is this person who was hindering my progress? Well, at least he died!”

One by one the curious employees lined up to view the contents of the coffin. Each one who looked inside it was rendered speechless! It was as if someone had touched the deepest part of their soul.

There was a mirror inside the coffin.

Each person who looked inside it could see a perfect image of him or herself.

There was a message next to the mirror that read:

“There is only one person who is capable of setting limits to your growth. It is YOU.

You are the only person who can revolutionize your life. You are the only person who can influence your happiness, your realization and your success. You are the only person who can help yourself.

Your life does not change when your boss changes, when your friends change, when your parents change, when your partner changes, when your company changes. Your life changes when YOU change, when you go beyond your limiting beliefs, when you realize that you are the only one responsible for your life.

The most important relationship you can have, is the one you have with yourself.

Examine yourself, watch yourself. Don't be afraid of difficulties, impossibilities and losses: be a winner, build yourself and your reality.”

The world is like a mirror. It reflects back to people the reality that they have created.

You can justify your shortcomings, you can blame other people, events or things that you perceive to have held you back – but you won’t change the reality in which you find yourself until you take full responsibility for who you are, what you do and where you are.

By taking responsibility you will see the world in a different more positive light and you will realise the huge potential you have for changing it into a happier more joyful place.

Have a wonderful festive season wherever you plan to be. Insights will be grace your inbox again early in the New Year.

Warm Regards

Bill
